We see this time and time again in this modern age and it's something that always seems to irk me. Why is it that when some actors play certain characters they get attacked like they = the character.
For example: Jack Gleeson who played Joffrey in 'Game of Thrones'
If you have seen / read GoT then you know that this Character is one of the most horrendous characters in the show / books. Though we all should keep in mind that Gleeson is not the character, we should really be thankful that anyone was willing to play Joffrey, let alone do such an amazing job. I fully believe that it is okay to get invested in the world of shows, especially one like 'Game of Thrones' and Joffrey is meant to be the character we dislike and root against. He executed Ned Stark, I remember the first time I saw that, it was so brutal. Even though I, like most, strongly detest the character, I have never once blamed the actor. Since I have done plays before I know that there is a disconnect between the actor and the character, that certainly seems like a foreign concept to some.
Gleeson is the most well-known example of this mistreatment but I would also like to voice one that has personally angered me. Kaya Scodelario who played Teresa in 'The Maze Runner' is another character that is complex and quite hated in the Maze Runner community, I myself have been on the fence about if Teresa was good or bad. Either way there are still people that treat Scodelario like she was the one that betrayed the Gladers.
The sad fact is that there are a lot more actors that have experienced the same thing and it has made no sense to me. At the end of the day, these people are just doing their jobs and they create entertainment for us so we all should be grateful for them. If the actors weren't so good at their jobs then you wouldn't hate their characters so much.
